Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V

The Fraunhofer Institute of Ceramic Technologies and Systems (IKTS), as one institute of the Fraunhofer Society, covers the complete field of ceramics from the basic material research to the application and system integration. The three core competences of Fraunhofer IKTS are material know-how, technology and production process development and quality assurance in manufacturing. IKTS has an excellent network of industrial and R&D partners worldwide.

Fraunhofer IKTS works since 1992 in field of Solid Oxide Cells and is one of worldwide leading R&D institutions in this area. In numerous national and international funded projects, the scientific and technological base for design and production of planar SOC cells and stacks has been established. Following a modular approach of stack development, all single technologies like cell production, tape casting or screen printing of glass seal, assembly and finish of bipolar plates, internal contacting, assembling, sealing and initialization procedures, were developed and applied from single components up to full scale stack level. IKTS has strong background in material and component simulation which plays an important role in SOC technology development and evaluation. Several SOC related technologies have been developed at IKTS and transferred to industry for commercialization: electrolyte supported cell manufacturing (Fa. Kerafol), SOC stack based on ferritic steel interconnect (Fa. Sunfire / Staxera) and CFY interconnect stack (mPower).
